This is my first tattoo. And there are a few reasons I did want to get it. These are the lyrics of a song called Poet, by Bastille (band that I love, by the way).
First of all, mankind has always fascinated me. It seems mindblowing to me that we all accept that history started the day a person decided to write down what it was happening. Thanks to that, we can learn, we can improve. Without writing down everything, there wouldn’t be as much knowledge as we have nowadays.
In second place, my mum. She taught me how to read and write since I was a little girl, and encouraged me to express myself in that way. Death scared me some time ago, but then I realised that I didn’t have to live a life that gave me fame just to be remembered. This is about not to be forgotten. I decided to write down everything that has happened to me. It doesn’t matter if my life is boring or if I don’t get what I want of it: as long as somebody reads, someday, something I’ve written, then it’s all worth it. I don’t need to be part of history of mankind, I’m no longer afraid of death; it’s more than enough if I get to be part of the story of somebody else. And even if it doesn’t happen, at least it helps me to be happy. When I’m 60, I’ll be able to remember everything I lived.
And I’m obviously not talking only about myself. I’ve written about all my friends, family, lovers. I’ve written down all my thoughts, my songs, my stories. We will be eternal, we will be ageless. This is what I think that writing can give us: we can live forever.
I think the reasoning behind your tattoo is beautiful :). I love it when people get tattoos about things that are very, very important to them!
And of course, BASTILLE YAYAYAYAAAA ♥
